Nevertheless, she has managed to contact James with a letter and told him to meet her at Silent Hill. James' deceased wife, who died before the events of the game. The guilt of this act, which he has managed to block out, is what draws him to Silent Hill. It's later revealed that he euthanized his wife to end her suffering, and that it may not have been entirely out of compassion. He was working as a clerk when his wife died of a mysterious illness. As with the first game, certain streets are blocked and it is up to trial and error from the player in order to find their way through their maze-like surroundings, hampered by the fog. The first street the player comes onto is the corner of Lindsey Street and Sanders Street. Its predecessor, Silent Hill, had the player start on the streets of the deserted town.
After continuing through a long alleyway, the path eventually leads to the town of Silent Hill itself. The first playable section leads the player on and on, through a forest trail eventually ending in a cemetery. Silent Hill 2 begins in a bathroom opposite Toluca Lake, some way from the town of Silent Hill itself. Often the game is classified as survival horror - the player has limited resources at their disposal and has to conserve resources in order to survive mainly ammunition and medical supplies. As well as exploring James will have to complete different puzzles, battle many disturbing enemies, travel in the dark, and uncover the truth behind the town of Silent Hill and behind him and his wife's story. Like the other Silent Hill games the character is controlled in a third-person perspective (except for Silent Hill 4 where Henry is controlled via a first-person perspective during his time inside "The Room") while the protagonist explores different locations in Silent Hill and the town itself. Other than some shared location names, including the titular town of Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2's story is entirely new and self-contained. It is also the first multi-platform game in the series, as Silent Hill 2 was released for the Xbox in December 2001 and the PC in December 2002.
